So many times I hear hosts lament about what they need to be a great host or what they need to do to serve their guests better. This is all fantastic and I endorse this approach and I have tons of things to write about it in other blog posts. However, today, while reading this, I want you, my eager and energetic host, to take a step backwards.
- What sort of host are you?
- What brings you joy when you are hosting?
- How are you different from other hosts in your area?
Just as there are as many types of guests as there are subway stations in Tokyo, there are many types of hosts. Digging deep into who you are and how you want to show up as a host, really can make the difference between simply having a business that pays your mortgage and creating spaces that wow and delight your ideal guest. Spaces which sets you apart from the cookie cutter hosts around you.
What are your hosting goals? Not all the answers may be financial and this is where your unique skills and personality take centre stage.
The sorts of questions to ask yourself are:
- Do I like creating beautifully designed Pinterest worthy spaces?
- Am I a traveler who wants to create interesting memories for other travelers?
- Am I a homebody who wants to give guests a cozy home away from home?
- Am I a collector of unique art or objects and I want to share with people who will appreciate this?
- Do I love to meet people of different cultures and create connections?
All of these are valid and worthy and all can make for successful hosting businesses. Only you know the answers that are unique for you, your lifestyle, your goals and your space.
We are never just one thing as people, guests and host alike. Knowing who we are and what we want out of our businesses can transform your business into a unique thing that sets you apart from the competition.
YOU BE YOU.
From now, today, as you are reading this, I am giving you permission to explore this and in some upcoming posts I can dive into different styles of hosting and how this can translate into higher profits and attracting the guests who are the right fit.
Drop me a note in the comments to let me know what sort of host you are.
