When faced with an underutilized, awkward corner in one of our vacation rental properties, I saw a chance to combine creativity with practicality. The challenge? The kitchen lacked enough bench space, which is always a frustration for guests. My solution? A custom flat-packed furniture hack that transformed the area into a functional and stylish space – Read on for my Vacation rental furniture hacks!
Flat-packed furniture is an affordable and versatile choice for creative projects, and this odd corner offered the perfect challenge. After scouting pieces that fit my vision, I got to work. The process included careful measuring, sawing, and a bit of tweaking to adapt the furniture to the space. The results? A smart addition to the kitchen that looks great and works even better.
The design needed to serve multiple purposes. I planned around an existing wine fridge, allowed easy access to the front doorbell camera, and even created a hidden spot for the internet routers—essential but never aesthetically pleasing! The core components? Two 30cm-wide laundry cupboards, which fit perfectly next to the wine fridge. To tie it all together, I crafted a custom wooden board to connect the two units, providing extra countertop space.
Here’s how it turned out:
• Before: An awkward, unused space.
• After: A stylish bar area or extra counter space that’s guest-friendly and functional – the perfect vacation rental furniture hack!
One thoughtful detail I included was easy cable access for appliances that guests might use occasionally. The entire project was budget-friendly—about a tenth of what a custom-built unit would have cost. Plus, it was incredibly rewarding to plan and execute the hack.
For short-term rental hosts, maximizing functionality and flow is key. Guests value convenience, and small upgrades like this can make a big difference in their experience. I always think about how guests will “live” in a space during their stay and look for ways to make it more comfortable and accessible.
If you’ve got an awkward corner or underused area in your rental, don’t hesitate to get creative. With a bit of DIY effort, you can turn a limitation into an opportunity to elevate your space.
